AVANSA® – reliable equipment for heating and home safety

AVANSA® is a brand of heating and safety equipment distributed across Europe by ATRIA Slovensko s.r.o., based in Žilina, Slovakia. The range covers what almost every family-home boiler room needs: circulation pumps for central heating, room and boiler thermostats, backup power supplies (UPS) for solid-fuel boilers, and gas and carbon monoxide detectors.

AVANSA circulation pumps have a cast-iron body and an asynchronous motor with three speeds, selected directly on the terminal box. They handle media from -10 to +110 °C at working pressures of up to 10 bar. The room thermostats are suitable for controlling most boilers with a switching voltage of 24 – 230 V and come in both wired and wireless versions. During a power cut, the backup power supplies deliver a pure sine wave output, so the circulation pump keeps running and the boiler can cool down safely. Gas detectors with a sensitivity of 10% of the lower explosive limit (LEL) can shut off the gas supply automatically when supplied as a set with a solenoid valve.

On this website you will find an overview of the full range, technical specifications, comparisons and practical advice on selection and wiring. All products are available from the ATRIASHOP.EU online store – most of them shipped straight from our warehouse in Žilina. Installers, heating contractors and resellers can buy on wholesale terms via atria-europe.com. If you are planning a complete heating system, take a look at our specialist website on H.P.W.® brass manifolds as well.

What you need from the AVANSA range – by situation

Most people are not looking for a brand but for a solution to a specific problem. Here is a shortcut to the right product.

The old circulation pump has reached the end of its life

Measure the installation length of the old pump (130 or 180 mm) and check the thread on the pump body (1", 6/4" or 2"). For a typical family home, an AVANSA circulation pump with a 6 m head is then usually enough, or the economical 4 m version for smaller systems. If you used to have an Aquart pump, we now sell the same models under the AVANSA brand with the same size designations.

Hot water takes a long time to arrive

If the water heater is far from the bathroom or kitchen, the AVANSA CP 15-1.5 recirculation pump will help. It keeps domestic hot water circulating between the cylinder and the taps, so hot water arrives almost immediately and does not run needlessly down the drain. It has a brass body suitable for drinking water, a power input of 25 W, a G 1/2" connection and a cable with a plug. Add a timer switch so that it runs only when you actually use hot water – for example in the morning and evening.

I heat with wood or coal

A solid-fuel boiler needs water to keep circulating even during a power cut. The basis is an AVANSA boiler backup power supply with a lead-acid battery, together with an AVANSA 110 C or 110 E pump controller, which switches the pump according to the boiler temperature, and an STS safety valve for the cooling loop. A carbon monoxide detector also belongs in the boiler room.

I want to heat more economically

The biggest saving comes from an AVANSA room thermostat with a weekly programme – the boiler does not fire when nobody is at home and holds a lower temperature at night. If you do not want to run a cable, choose the wireless 2007 TX model. On the pump, set the lowest speed at which all the radiators still heat up.

I have a gas boiler, cooker or propane-butane

A kitchen or boiler room should have an AVANSA gas detector – near the ceiling for natural gas, near the floor for LPG. In a kit with a solenoid valve, it shuts off the gas supply by itself in the event of a leak. The 150MC detector protects against carbon monoxide from a boiler or stove.

I am building or renovating underfloor heating

The AVANSA pump and thermostat are only part of the system. You will find manifolds with flow meters on the H.P.W.® brass manifolds website, and a heating installer or our technical support can help you size the number of circuits and the amount of pipe.

checklistStep by step

How to build a reliable boiler room with Avansa

Six steps, from the pump to protecting the boiler against dirt. Each step links to a page with a detailed selection guide.

Choose a circulation pump

The key factors are head, flow rate, installation length (130 or 180 mm) and connection thread (1", 6/4" or 2"). A head of up to 6 m is usually sufficient for a typical family home, while larger and multi-zone systems need 8 m. Pump speed is set with a three-position switch. You will find an overview of the models on the Circulation pumps page.

Add a backup power supply to a solid-fuel boiler

During a power cut, the UPS immediately powers the pump from the battery so that the boiler can cool down safely. Allow a margin for the pump's start-up current – a 500 W unit is suitable for loads of up to approx. 250 W in total. Help with choosing the model and battery is on the Backup power supplies page.

Control the pump with a boiler thermostat

The AVANSA 110 C or 110 E controller switches the pump on only once the boiler exceeds the set temperature and switches it off again after it has cooled down – depending on how the boiler is used, this can save up to 60% of the electricity and extend the pump's service life. The 110 Z model adds DHW cylinder heating, the 110 R controls two pumps and the 110 S a solar circuit. More on the Thermostats page.

Add a room thermostat

The manual AVANSA 2003 maintains a single set temperature, while the programmable AVANSA 2007 allows up to 6 temperature changes a day according to a weekly programme. The TX versions work wirelessly with a receiver next to the boiler (range approx. 50 m) – particularly handy when renovating older buildings. See the comparison on the Thermostats page.

Protect your home with a detector

A gas boiler should always be paired with the AVANSA 100M gas detector – supplied as a set with a solenoid valve, it shuts off the gas supply by itself if a leak occurs. Carbon monoxide, which a gas detector cannot pick up, calls for the separate AVANSA 150MC detector. More on the Detectors page.

Fit a magnetic filter to the boiler

The Aras 3/4" magnetic filter captures ferrous debris with a neodymium magnet, while its filter mesh also traps non-magnetic particles from radiators and pipework. The pack includes a swivel boiler connection, a G3/4" ball valve and a spanner, and the magnet is easy to remove for cleaning. Maintenance tips are in the Advice section.

battery_charging_fullBoiler room safety

Why a backup power supply is a must for a solid-fuel boiler

A gas boiler simply switches off during a power cut. A boiler burning wood, coal or coke, however, cannot be stopped like that – the fuel in the firebox keeps burning until it has burnt out. If the circulation pump stops, heat is no longer carried away to the radiators, the water in the boiler overheats and the central heating system is at risk of boiling. The result can be a damaged boiler, leaks or a dangerous condition of the whole system.

The AVANSA backup power supply (UPS) is designed for exactly this situation. When the mains supply fails or the voltage falls outside the normal range, it switches to battery automatically in less than 4 ms, keeps the circulation pumps running and lets the boiler cool down safely. The switch-over is indicated on the display and by an audible signal. The output voltage is a pure sine wave, identical to the mains voltage in your home, which suits the motors of circulation pumps. Once the mains supply returns, the unit recharges the battery.

How to choose the right output

A circulation pump is an inductive load and may need up to twice its rated power when starting. That is why it is recommended to load the backup power supply to no more than 50% of its maximum output:

  • AVANSA 300 W (500 VA) – smaller installations, 12 V battery with a capacity of up to 90 Ah.
  • AVANSA 500 W (800 VA) – loads of up to approx. 250 W in total, 12 V battery up to 120 Ah.
  • AVANSA 700 W (1000 VA) – loads of up to approx. 350 W in total, 12 V battery up to 150 Ah.
  • AVANSA 1050 W (1500 VA) – loads of up to approx. 500 W in total; requires 24 V, i.e. two 12 V batteries connected in series, each with a capacity of no more than 120 Ah.

Add up the power input of all the pumps the unit is to back up, plus the boiler electronics if applicable. With three-speed AVANSA pumps this is a matter of tens of watts – the 25/6/180 model, for example, draws 93/67/46 W depending on the selected speed.

How long the backup lasts

The backup time depends on the battery capacity and the actual load. Approximate values:

  • at a load of 100 W: a 65 Ah battery lasts about 3.5 h, 120 Ah about 6.5 h, 150 Ah about 8 h,
  • at a load of 200 W: 65 Ah about 2 h, 120 Ah about 3 h, 150 Ah about 4 h,
  • at a load of 300 W: 65 Ah about 1.5 h, 120 Ah about 2.5 h, 150 Ah about 3 h.

Protective functions

  • Automatic voltage regulation (AVR) keeps the voltage supplied to connected devices constant.
  • Overload protection – if the load exceeds 110% of the rated output, the unit shuts down and warns you with an intermittent audible signal.
  • Short-circuit protection and battery protection – when the battery voltage drops to 10.8 V, the unit cuts the output so the battery is not damaged.
  • A high charging current of approximately 10 A charges the battery faster than a standard charger, and once charged, the unit keeps it on standby.

Battery, installation and maintenance

  • The unit works only with an external lead-acid battery; gel batteries are not recommended. The unit should not be used without a battery connected.
  • Standalone units are supplied without a battery. The AVANSA SET (500 W + 46 Ah) and AVANSA SET I. (700 W + 55 Ah) sets are more convenient.
  • Connection sequence: battery first, then the 230 V mains supply to an earthed socket, and finally the load. Switch the unit on by holding the ON/OFF button for 4 seconds.
  • Place the unit in a dry, well-ventilated spot free from moisture and dust – in a boiler room, keep it away from coal dust in particular, as this could clog the fan. Never install it in a flammable environment or near fuel.
  • Every 2 months, discharge the battery and fully recharge it again – this extends its service life even if there has been no power cut in the meantime.
A backup power supply is a safety device for power cuts. As an additional safeguard against overheating, consider the AVANSA STS safety valve for a cooling loop – if the boiler overheats above 97 °C, it ensures the boiler is cooled. It is connected to the cooling loop and the cold water supply.

You will find a complete overview of models and specifications on the AVANSA backup power supplies page.

sensorsHome safety

Gas and carbon monoxide detectors – a small investment in safety

A leak of natural gas or propane-butane can lead to poisoning, suffocation, fire or explosion. The AVANSA 100M detector picks up gas at a concentration as low as 10% of the lower explosive limit (LEL) with a response time of under 30 seconds and triggers a visual and audible alarm of more than 90 dB. As a set with a solenoid valve (G1/2" DN15, G3/4" DN20 or G1" DN25), it also shuts off the gas supply by itself.

Correct installation is crucial

  • Natural gas (methane) is lighter than air – the detector belongs on the wall about 30 cm below the ceiling.
  • LPG (propane, butane) is heavier than air – mount the detector about 30 cm above the floor.
  • Do not place it closer than 1.5 m to heating systems, stoves and fireplaces, behind furniture or curtains, in damp and dusty areas, or where solvents are released.
  • The cable between the detector and the solenoid valve may be no longer than 20 m in total, and the polarity must be observed (white wire +, black wire −).

A gas detector will not pick up carbon monoxide

Carbon monoxide (CO) is colourless, odourless and non-irritating, so poisoning strikes without warning – a sleeping person may not notice it at all. A gas detector cannot recognise carbon monoxide or smoke. CO calls for the separate AVANSA 150MC detector with a sensitivity of 150 ppm ± 80 ppm and an alarm of more than 85 dB.

A detector only protects the room in which it is installed and does not work during a power cut. Install one on every floor and in every room where a leak could occur. Test it once a month with the TEST button and carefully vacuum the dust from the vents – without opening the detector.

You can compare all models and valve sets on the AVANSA detectors page.

eventMaintenance

Looking after your boiler room throughout the year

A few simple tasks at the right time extend the life of the pump and battery and ensure that the safety equipment works when it is needed.

Before the heating season

  • check the system pressure and bleed the radiators, and the underfloor heating manifold if fitted,
  • clean the Aras magnetic filter – remove the neodymium magnet and wipe it clean,
  • replace the batteries in the room thermostat and check the clock and programme settings,
  • simulate a power cut and check that the backup power supply switches to the battery and the pump keeps running,
  • press TEST on the gas and CO detectors.

During winter

  • check that even the most distant radiators heat up – if not, switch the pump up one speed,
  • with a solid-fuel boiler, never switch off the pump while the fire is burning,
  • once a month, test the detectors and carefully vacuum the dust from their vents.

After the season and in summer

  • switch off the heating pump, but run it briefly from time to time so that the rotor does not seize – the AVANSA 110 E controller does this by itself with its anti-seize function (15 seconds every 15 days),
  • even without a power cut, fully discharge and recharge the backup power supply battery once every 2 months, as the manufacturer recommends,
  • summer is the best time to replace the pump, flush the system and fit a filter.

Frequently asked questions about Avansa products

Where can I buy AVANSA products and who can help me choose?
AVANSA products are sold by the official distributor, ATRIA Slovensko s.r.o. of Žilina, Slovakia, through the ATRIASHOP.EU online store. Installers, heating contractors and resellers can buy on wholesale terms via atria-europe.com. We also take orders by phone on +421 917 133 662, answer technical questions on +421 917 133 664 and handle claims on +421 917 710 567 or by e-mail at info@atria.sk.
Which AVANSA circulation pump should I choose for a family home?
The pump head must cover the pressure losses of the heating circuit, which depend on the length of the pipework, the number of radiators or circuits and the resistance of the fittings. A head of up to 6 m is usually sufficient for a typical family home (for example AVANSA 25/6/180 or 25/6/130), while larger and multi-zone systems call for 8 m (AVANSA 25/8/180 or 32/8/180). The installation length (130 or 180 mm) and connection thread must match the original pump. If in doubt, a heating engineer can size the flow and head precisely. You will find an overview of the models on the Circulation pumps page.
What does a pump designation such as 25/6/180 mean?
The first number is the nominal bore of the suction and discharge ports (DN 25 mm), the second is the maximum head in metres (6 m) and the third is the installation length, i.e. the distance between the suction and discharge ports (180 mm). The connection thread is a separate figure – the 25/… models have a 6/4" thread, the 32/… models a 2" thread and the 15/6/130 model a 1" thread. So do not confuse the nominal bore (DN) with the thread size.
Is a battery included with the backup power supply?
The standalone AVANSA 300 W, 500 W, 700 W and 1050 W backup power supplies are supplied without a battery. If you want a ready-made solution, choose the AVANSA SET (500 W + 12 V 46 Ah battery) or AVANSA SET I. (700 W + 12 V 55 Ah battery). Use a lead-acid battery; gel batteries are not recommended. The 1050 W model needs 24 V, i.e. two 12 V batteries connected in series.
What backup power supply output do I need?
Add up the power input of all the pumps the unit is to back up, plus the boiler electronics if applicable. Because pumps draw more current when starting, it is recommended to use no more than half of the unit's maximum output: AVANSA 500 W is suitable for loads of up to approx. 250 W, 700 W for up to approx. 350 W and 1050 W for up to approx. 500 W in total. More on the Backup power supplies page.
How long can a backup power supply keep a pump running?
That depends on the battery capacity and the actual load. As a guide, at a load of 100 W a 65 Ah battery lasts about 3.5 hours, 120 Ah about 6.5 hours and 150 Ah about 8 hours; at 200 W it is about 2, 3 and 4 hours respectively. A larger battery means a longer backup time, but each model has its own maximum battery capacity (300 W: 90 Ah, 500 W: 120 Ah, 700 W: 150 Ah).
What is the difference between the AVANSA 2003 and 2007 thermostats?
The AVANSA 2003 is a manual, non-programmable room thermostat with a digital display – it maintains a single set temperature in the range of 10 – 30 °C and has a +7 °C frost protection mode. The AVANSA 2007 is a programmable weekly thermostat: it can switch on 6 times a day, with a different temperature for each time (7 – 35 °C, in 0.5 °C steps). Both are also available as wireless TX versions with a receiver next to the boiler and a range of approx. 50 m, so there is no need to run a cable. See the comparison on the Thermostats page.
Where should a gas detector be installed?
For natural gas (methane), which is lighter than air, on the wall about 30 cm below the ceiling. For LPG (propane, butane), which is heavier than air, about 30 cm above the floor. Do not place the detector closer than 1.5 m to heating systems, stoves and fireplaces, behind furniture or curtains, or in damp and dusty areas. More on the Detectors page.
Will a gas detector also detect carbon monoxide?
No. The AVANSA 100M gas detector is designed for natural gas and LPG and cannot recognise carbon monoxide or smoke. Protection against CO poisoning is provided by the separate AVANSA 150MC detector with a sensitivity of 150 ppm ± 80 ppm and an alarm of more than 85 dB.
What should I do if the gas detector sounds the alarm?
Do not use any light switches or electrical appliances and avoid anything that could cause a spark. Open doors and windows, close all gas valves and leave the area immediately. Do not make phone calls inside the affected area – call your local gas distributor's emergency line or 112 only once you are outside. Return only after the area has been fully ventilated and the leak has been fixed, and treat every alarm as genuine until a leak has been ruled out.
Are AVANSA pumps the same as Aquart pumps?
Yes, we now sell the same circulation pump models under the AVANSA brand and the size designations have stayed the same – for example, the Aquart 25/6/180 is now the AVANSA 25/6/180.
What do I need for a solid-fuel boiler?
A circulation pump, a pump controller (for example AVANSA 110 C or 110 E), a backup power supply that keeps the pump running during a power cut, and an STS safety valve for the cooling loop. We also recommend a carbon monoxide detector and a magnetic filter. You will find an overview in the By situation section.
Can an AVANSA thermostat be used with a boiler of another brand?
Yes. According to the manufacturer, AVANSA room thermostats are suitable for controlling most boilers on the market with an operating voltage of 24 – 230 V. The boiler must have terminals for connecting a room thermostat – you can check this in its manual.
Will an AVANSA pump replace an old pump of another brand?
In most cases yes, provided the installation length (130 or 180 mm), the thread on the pump body and the head match. Pumps from different manufacturers have different performance curves, so this is not a 1:1 catalogue replacement. You will find an overview of the models on the AVANSA circulation pumps page.
What is the Aras magnetic filter for?
It catches dirt in the heating water before it reaches the boiler and pump. The neodymium magnet attracts ferrous particles, while non-magnetic particles are caught by the filter mesh. The package includes a swivel connection to the boiler, a G3/4" ball valve and a spanner; the magnet is easy to remove for cleaning.
How much electricity does the AVANSA 110 pump controller save?
The controller switches the pump on only when the boiler is hot and switches it off once it has cooled down. The manufacturer states electricity savings of up to 60 %, depending on how the boiler is used, as well as a longer pump life.
