Why a room thermostat pays off

A boiler without a room thermostat has no idea what the temperature is in your living room right now – it works mainly from the temperature of the heating water. The result is often overheated rooms, wasted fuel and higher bills. A room thermostat measures the temperature directly in the room and switches the boiler on only when the temperature drops below the set value. Once that value is reached, it switches the boiler off again.

How exactly this works is shown by an example from the technical data of the AVANSA 2007 thermostat: with a set temperature of 20 °C and a switching sensitivity of ±0.2 °C, the thermostat switches the boiler on at 19.8 °C and off at 20.2 °C. The room temperature is thus kept within a narrow band and the boiler does not run unnecessarily.

Comfort and savings in one

  • Steady temperature – the thermostat responds to the actual measured room temperature. AVANSA digital models measure with an accuracy of ±0.5 °C.
  • Time programme – the programmable models (AVANSA 2007, AVANSA 2007 TX and TH 091) lower the temperature at night or while you are out and heat the room up again before you return.
  • Lower energy costs – for its AVANSA room thermostats, the manufacturer states that they deliver lower energy costs while maintaining a high level of comfort.
  • Heating and cooling – the AVANSA 2007 can be set for heating or cooling, and according to the manufacturer the 2007, 2007 TX, 2003 and 2003 TX models can also be connected to air-conditioning equipment.

Suitable for most boilers

According to the manufacturer, AVANSA room thermostats are suitable for controlling most boilers on the market. They connect to a boiler or air-conditioning unit with an operating voltage of 24 to 230 V – the thermostat contact switches 24 V AC/DC to 250 V AC. The wireless AVANSA 2007 TX connects to a boiler that has a two-wire room thermostat connection.

A thermostat is just one part of the heating system. You will find a reliable circulation pump in the AVANSA circulation pumps section, and for a solid-fuel boiler we recommend an AVANSA backup power supply, which keeps the circulation pump running during a power cut so that the boiler can cool down safely.

Programmable, manual or wireless thermostat?

All AVANSA room thermostats do the same thing – they switch the boiler on and off according to the room temperature. They differ in how conveniently they are operated and how they connect to the boiler.

Weekly programmable thermostat – AVANSA 2007, 2007 TX, TH 091

Suitable for anyone with an at least roughly regular daily routine. The AVANSA 2007 and 2007 TX let you set 6 times and 6 different temperatures for each day, so the house is warmed up in the morning before you get up, the temperature is lowered during the working day and raised again in the evening. The TH 091 works with two temperatures – day and setback – and can have a different programme for each day of the week. A programmable thermostat is the most effective way to save energy without losing comfort, because the heating does not run when nobody is at home.

Manual digital thermostat – AVANSA 2003, 2003 TX

It holds a single set temperature in the range 10 – 30 °C and there is nothing to programme. It is the right choice for a household where someone is at home all day, for seniors who do not want to deal with menus, or for a holiday home – frost mode keeps a constant +7 °C. The digital display measures more accurately than a simple mechanical thermostat (accuracy ±0.5 °C).

Mechanical thermostat – AVANSA TH1

The simplest solution, with a rotary knob, no batteries and no display. Contact rating 16 A / 250 V, operating temperature +5 to +30 °C. Suitable where basic control is enough and price is the main criterion.

Wired or wireless?

  • Wired (2007, 2003, TH 091, TH1) – cheaper, with no receiver; it needs a two-core cable from the thermostat location to the boiler. Ideal for a new build, where the cable is laid before plastering.
  • Wireless (2007 TX, 2003 TX) – a receiver powered by 230 V is connected to the boiler and the thermostat communicates by radio with a range of approx. 50 m. There is no need to chase channels into walls, you can move the thermostat around, and the 2007 TX can be used in the living room during the day and in the bedroom in the evening.
  • Reinforced concrete walls and several floors between the thermostat and the boiler can shorten the range – test the connection before settling on the final position.

Typical set-ups

  • Flat or house with a gas boiler: AVANSA 2007 (wired) or 2007 TX (no cable).
  • Renovation without chasing walls: wireless AVANSA 2007 TX or 2003 TX.
  • Holiday home and weekend house: AVANSA 2003 with +7 °C frost mode, or TH 091 with frost protection.
  • Boiler room with a solid-fuel boiler: AVANSA 110 C or 110 E pump controller, TH 2A clamp-on thermostat and a boiler backup power supply for the AVANSA circulation pump.
  • Boiler with a hot water cylinder: AVANSA 110 Z with DHW priority.
tune110 series

110 series thermostats for pumps and boiler rooms

Instead of monitoring the room temperature, 110 series controllers monitor the temperature of the boiler, cylinder or collector and switch the pumps accordingly. The pump therefore does not run unnecessarily – the manufacturer states electricity savings of up to 60%, depending on how the boiler is used, and a longer pump service life.

compare_arrows110 series in detail

Which 110 series controller to choose

All 110 series controllers are powered from 230 V / 50 Hz (±10%) and operate at ambient temperatures of -10 to +50 °C. They differ in the number of pumps they control and in what triggers them.

AVANSA 110 C – one pump, simplest operation

It switches the heating pump on when the boiler temperature exceeds the set value and switches it off when the boiler cools down (for example after the fire has gone out). The temperature is set with a potentiometer in the range of 10–90 °C, and the pump switches off when the temperature drops 5 °C below the set value. Both switching on and off take place with a delay of approximately 30 seconds, so that the pump does not toggle with sudden temperature changes. In addition to the potentiometer, the controller has two switches – one to switch the controller on and off and one to switch the pump on manually – with LED indication. There is a fuse inside the housing, and the sensor is 1.2 m long.

AVANSA 110 E – one pump with protective functions

It performs the same task as the 110 C (setting 5–80 °C, measuring range 0–90 °C, switching current 6 A), with the addition of an anti-seize function that runs the pump for 15 seconds every 15 days outside the heating season, and frost protection – it switches the pump on when the temperature drops below 5 °C.

AVANSA 110 R – two independent pumps

The first pump (setting 5–80 °C) runs when the temperature exceeds the set value and switches off when the boiler cools down. For the second pump (10–80 °C), you set both a switch-on and a switch-off temperature: it switches on once the switch-on temperature is exceeded and switches off once the switch-off temperature is exceeded.

AVANSA 110 Z – heating and hot water cylinder

It controls the heating pump (5–80 °C) and the DHW cylinder pump (20–80 °C). The cylinder pump works on the basis of temperature difference: it switches on when the boiler is warmer than the cylinder by the set hysteresis (10–30 °C) and runs until the temperatures equalise or until the cylinder reaches the set temperature.

  • Function P (priority) – the DHW cylinder is charged first, and only once it has reached its temperature does the heating pump start too. Without priority, both pumps work independently. The function is activated by holding the MENU button until the display shows the letter P, then selecting ON or OFF with the arrow keys.
  • Function L (summer mode) – the heating pump is off and only the cylinder pump works. If the boiler temperature exceeds 90 °C, the heating pump switches on to protect the boiler from overheating.

AVANSA 110 S – solar collector and circulation

It controls the solar collector pump and the circulation pump. The collector pump switches on when the collector is warmer than the cylinder by the set hysteresis (10–30 °C); the switch-off hysteresis is always 10 °C lower. With a switch-on hysteresis of 20 °C, the pump therefore switches off at a difference of 10 °C. With a setting of 10 °C, it runs until the collector and cylinder temperatures equalise or until the cylinder reaches the set temperature. The circulation pump switches on when the cylinder exceeds the set switch-on temperature and runs until it falls below it. The controller measures in the range of 0–150 °C.

With a solid-fuel boiler, also plan for power cuts – an AVANSA backup power supply keeps the circulation pump running so that the boiler can cool down safely.

When to choose a clamp-on, immersion or plug-in thermostat

AVANSA TH 2A clamp-on thermostat – pipe temperature controls the pump

It is placed directly on the pipe or manifold and secured with a flexible steel clip (pipes up to 2" in diameter). Inside is a bimetallic strip that bends when the temperature changes and switches the contact – most often the live wire of the circulation pump. Thanks to its changeover contact, it can be wired as either a switch-on or a switch-off thermostat. Typical uses:

  • controlling boiler pump overrun, for example in a solid-fuel boiler circuit,
  • charging a buffer tank or a hot water cylinder,
  • underfloor heating safety thermostat – switches off the underfloor circuit pump and protects the floor from overheating.

TH-2B immersion thermostat with capillary – water temperature in the tank

The capillary sits in a sensor pocket with a 1/2" thread (85 mm long excluding the thread, 8 mm in diameter), so the thermostat measures the temperature of the liquid in the tank, water heater or pipe directly. It is suitable, for example, for controlling the temperature in a buffer tank or hot water cylinder. The setting range is 0–90 °C.

AVANSA TH6 set – thermostatic radiator valve

The set contains a DN15 thermostatic valve in an angled 1/2" design with side connection and a thermostatic head with a liquid-filled sensor. The head maintains the temperature according to the selected setting: * = 6 °C, 1 = 12 °C, 2 = 16 °C, 3 = 20 °C, 4 = 24 °C, 5 = 28 °C. According to the manufacturer, the set complies with EN 215.

Plug-in thermostat – electric heating element in a towel radiator

It is connected between the wall socket and the power cable of the heating element or coil fitted in a towel radiator. It controls the element's temperature and saves electricity compared with running it without control.

Mechanical AVANSA TH1 and weekly TH 091

AVANSA TH1 is a simple mechanical room thermostat with a 16 A / 250 V contact and an operating temperature of +5 to +30 °C. It must be disconnected from the mains during installation. The terminals are inside – you can reach them by removing the setting knob and unscrewing the cover; it is wired according to the diagram supplied in the pack.

The TH 091 thermostat is a weekly programmable thermostat with a backlit display for boilers with two-point (on/off) switching – gas, electric, condensing and wood, coal or pellet boilers. It can have a different programme for each day, works with comfort and setback temperatures, lets you set the boiler switching differential (so that the boiler does not cycle too often), has a manual mode and 7 °C frost protection, which is particularly useful in holiday cottages and weekend homes. The display shows the current and set temperature, the time, the day of the week, the selected programme and boiler operation. The pack includes installation instructions, screws and wall plugs.

How to connect a room thermostat to a boiler

A room thermostat is connected to the boiler as a simple switch. The AVANSA 2007 and 2003 thermostats are battery-powered, so they do not feed any voltage of their own into the boiler – their contact merely opens or closes the circuit that the boiler provides at its room thermostat terminals. This is what is known as a volt-free (dry) contact, which is why the same thermostat can handle boilers with a control voltage of both 24 V and 230 V (contact rated 24 V AC/DC to 250 V AC).

Procedure for a wired thermostat (AVANSA 2007, AVANSA 2003, TH 091)

  1. Disconnect the boiler from the mains. The boiler and the thermostat must both be de-energised during any installation work.
  2. Find the room thermostat terminals in the boiler manual. Most boilers have a pair of terminals for this purpose. If they are bridged with a link from the factory, follow the boiler manual.
  3. Run a two-core cable from where the thermostat will be located to the boiler and connect it to these two terminals.
  4. Connect the other end of the cable to the thermostat contact terminals according to the diagram in the thermostat manual.
  5. Insert the batteries, set the time, programme and required temperature, and only then switch the boiler back on. Check that the boiler switches on and off according to the thermostat.

Wireless versions AVANSA 2007 TX and 2003 TX

With a wireless thermostat, it is the receiver, not the thermostat itself, that is connected to the boiler. The receiver needs a 230 V AC supply, and its contact (24 V AC/DC to 250 V AC, 6 A, 2 A for inductive loads) is connected to the boiler's room thermostat terminals in the same way as the cable of a wired model. You can then place the thermostat anywhere within a range of approx. 50 m – there is no need to chase walls or run cables, which you will particularly appreciate when renovating older buildings.

Switching the live wire of a load

A thermostat can also switch the live wire of a load directly – typically a circulation pump (the manufacturer gives an example of wiring a circulation pump for the AVANSA 2007 and 2003 thermostats as well). The principle: the thermostat contact is inserted into the live conductor (L) of the load, while the neutral (N) and protective earth (PE) conductors go to the load directly. When the thermostat closes, the live reaches the pump and it starts; when it opens, the pump stops. This is how the AVANSA TH 2A clamp-on thermostat is wired, for example – it has a changeover contact and can work as either a switch-on or a switch-off thermostat.

Watch the contact rating. The load current must not exceed the contact rating given in the technical data: AVANSA 2007 8 A, AVANSA 2003 8 A (inductive load 2 A), TX version receiver 6 A (inductive load 2 A), TH 091 max. 5 A. A pump motor is an inductive load.

Safety first

  • Always follow both the boiler manual and the thermostat manual – terminal markings vary from one boiler manufacturer to another.
  • Connecting a thermostat to the electrical circuit of a heat source should be carried out by a qualified electrician. This applies in particular to work with 230 V mains voltage – TX receivers, 110 series controllers and switching the live wire of a pump.
  • With a gas boiler, also think about air safety – an AVANSA gas or carbon monoxide detector will warn you of a leak in good time.
  • If you are unsure, e-mail us your boiler model at info@atria.sk or call our technical line on +421 917 133 664 (Monday – Friday, 7:30 – 15:30 CET).
placeLocation

Where to place the thermostat

A room thermostat measures the temperature only at the spot where it hangs. If you place it badly, it will control the boiler based on a distorted reading – the room will be cold or, conversely, overheated. Choose a spot that best reflects the normal temperature in the room.

Recommended location

  • About 1.5 m above the floor on an interior wall of a living space – usually the living room, where you spend most of your time.
  • Away from radiators and other heat sources – a radiator, television or fridge will distort the reading.
  • Out of direct sunlight – sunshine falling on the thermostat “fools” it and it switches the boiler off before the room has warmed up.
  • Away from draughts – not near doors, windows or vents where air is moving.
  • Not on an external wall – a cold wall reads lower than the air temperature in the room.
  • Not behind furniture or curtains – air must be able to circulate freely around the thermostat.

The advantage of the wireless version

With the AVANSA 2007 TX and 2003 TX models, there is no need to run a cable to the boiler, so you do not have to choose the location once and for all. For the AVANSA 2007 TX, the manufacturer states that you can choose the optimum location while using it and even use the thermostat in different rooms at different times of day – in the living room during the day, in the bedroom in the evening. The receiver stays next to the boiler.

With radiator heating, leave the thermostatic radiator head in the room with the room thermostat fully open, so that the head does not shut off the radiator before the thermostat reaches the set temperature.
scheduleSettings

How to set a room thermostat so that it saves energy

Even the best thermostat saves only as much as its settings allow. These principles apply to both programmable and manual models.

Example of a weekly programme

The programmable AVANSA 2007 offers 6 times a day, and you assign each its own temperature. A working day might look like this:

  • 5:30 – morning warm-up before you get up,
  • 7:30 – setback once everyone has left the house,
  • 15:30 – warm-up before people return,
  • 18:00 – comfortable evening temperature,
  • 22:00 – night setback,
  • you can use the sixth time, for example, to warm the bathroom briefly before bathing.

At the weekend, set a different programme with a longer comfort period. Choose the specific temperatures to suit yourself – what matters is the difference between comfort and setback.

Setback: how much to lower the temperature

With radiators, the night setback is usually a few degrees below the comfort temperature – the radiators quickly warm the room in the morning. A setback that is too deep does not pay off: the building structure cools down and the boiler has to warm it up again in the morning. Underfloor heating reacts slowly, so choose a smaller setback and start heating earlier in the programme. On the AVANSA 2007, switch the switching sensitivity to +0/-0.2 °C, which the manufacturer recommends specifically for underfloor heating.

What switching sensitivity means

Sensitivity is the difference between the set and measured temperature at which the thermostat switches. With a setting of 20 °C and a sensitivity of ±0.2 °C, the AVANSA 2007 switches the boiler on at 19.8 °C and off at 20.2 °C. A smaller sensitivity means a more stable temperature, but the boiler switches more often. The AVANSA 2003 offers a choice of ±0.2 or ±0.3 °C, and the TH 091 lets you set the switching differential so that the boiler does not cycle too often.

The most common setting mistakes

  • a thermostat in a room with a fireplace or in the sun – the boiler switches off before the other rooms have warmed up,
  • a thermostatic radiator valve in the room with the room thermostat turned down to a low setting – the thermostat never reaches its target and the boiler runs needlessly,
  • time not reset after changing the batteries – the programme shifts and heats at the wrong hours,
  • with a solid-fuel boiler, a room thermostat that switches the pump off while the boiler is burning – here the pump must be switched by the boiler temperature (the 110 series or the TH 2A clamp-on thermostat),
  • a wireless thermostat at the limit of its range – the receiver loses the signal; try moving the thermostat closer to the boiler.
You will find more advice on heating, pumps and boiler room safety in the AVANSA advice centre, and an overview of the whole brand on the AVANSA home page.
checklistHow to choose

Choosing a thermostat in 5 steps

1. What do you want to control?

Room temperature is controlled by a room thermostat (AVANSA 2007, 2007 TX, 2003, 2003 TX, TH 091, TH1). A pump switched by boiler or cylinder temperature is controlled by the 110 series or the TH 2A clamp-on thermostat, water temperature in a tank by the TH-2B immersion thermostat, a radiator by the TH6 set and an electric element in a towel radiator by the plug-in thermostat.

2. Wired or wireless?

If there is already a cable to the boiler, or you can run one, the wired version will do. When renovating and you do not want to chase walls, go for the TX models – the receiver sits next to the boiler and the thermostat within a range of approx. 50 m.

3. Programme or manual setting?

If you have a regular daily routine, the weekly programme of the AVANSA 2007, 2007 TX or TH 091 lowers the temperature when you do not need it. If you just want to keep a single temperature, the AVANSA 2003 or 2003 TX is all you need.

4. Check the boiler and contact load

The boiler should have terminals for connecting a room thermostat. The contact of AVANSA thermostats switches 24 V AC/DC to 250 V AC; if the thermostat is to switch a pump directly, respect the contact's current limit.

5. Take the type of heating into account

For underfloor heating, set the AVANSA 2007 sensitivity to +0/-0.2 °C, for radiators ±0.2 °C. A boiler room with a DHW cylinder calls for the 110 Z, a solar circuit for the 110 S and two pumps for the 110 R.

helpFAQ

Frequently asked questions about AVANSA thermostats

Is an AVANSA thermostat compatible with my boiler?
According to the manufacturer, AVANSA room thermostats are suitable for controlling most boilers on the market. They connect to boilers and air-conditioning units with an operating voltage of 24–230 V (the contact switches 24 V AC/DC to 250 V AC). The boiler must have terminals for connecting a room thermostat – you can check this in the boiler manual. The TH 091 thermostat is designed for boilers with two-point (on/off) switching, including gas, electric, condensing and wood, coal or pellet boilers.
What is the difference between the AVANSA 2007 and AVANSA 2003?
The AVANSA 2007 is a programmable weekly thermostat – it can switch on 6 times a day, with a different temperature for each switching time (range 7–35 °C in 0.5 °C steps). The AVANSA 2003 is a manual, non-programmable thermostat with a digital display: it maintains a single set temperature (10–30 °C in 0.5 °C steps) and has a frost mode with a constant temperature of +7 °C.
How do the TX versions differ from the wired ones?
The AVANSA 2007 TX and 2003 TX models consist of two units – a thermostat and a receiver. The receiver is connected to the boiler (230 V AC supply) and communicates with the thermostat by radio, so no cable needs to be run between the thermostat and the boiler. Both units are factory-set to the same frequency and have their own security code, so they are not disturbed by outside signals.
What is the range of the wireless thermostat?
According to the manufacturer, the receiver range is approx. 50 m. Walls and ceilings can shorten the actual range, so test the connection on the spot where you want to place the thermostat.
What batteries does the thermostat use and how long do they last?
The AVANSA 2007, 2007 TX, 2003 and 2003 TX use 2 × 1.5 V AA (LR6) batteries, and the TH 091 thermostat two alkaline AA batteries. For the AVANSA 2003 and 2003 TX models, the manufacturer states a battery life of approximately 1 year. The receiver of the TX versions is powered from the 230 V mains.
Is the thermostat also suitable for underfloor heating?
Yes. On the AVANSA 2007, the switching sensitivity can be changed to +0/-0.2 °C, which the manufacturer recommends specifically for underfloor heating (±0.2 °C for radiators, the factory setting). The AVANSA TH 2A clamp-on thermostat serves as a safety thermostat that switches off the underfloor heating pump. For underfloor heating manifolds, take a look at our specialist website on H.P.W.® brass manifolds; further heating components are available from ATRIASHOP.EU.
What is the pump protection function?
The AVANSA 2007 switches the boiler on for one minute every day at 12:00 if, according to the programme, it has not been on for more than 24 hours. The anti-seize function of the AVANSA 110 E controller serves a similar purpose – outside the heating season, it runs the pump for 15 seconds every 15 days.
What are the 110 series thermostats for?
The 110 series controls the pumps in a boiler room according to the temperature of the boiler, cylinder or solar collector. The pump therefore runs only when it makes sense – the manufacturer states electricity savings of up to 60%, depending on how the boiler is used, and a longer pump service life. You will find suitable pumps in the AVANSA circulation pumps section.
Does the thermostat have to be connected by an electrician?
Connecting a thermostat to the electrical circuit of a heat source should be carried out by a qualified electrician, as it involves work on the electrical installation and switching a load. This applies in particular to the receivers of the TX versions, the 110 series controllers and the TH 2A clamp-on thermostat, which work with 230 V mains voltage.
Can the thermostat also control air conditioning?
Yes. The AVANSA 2007 can be set for both heating and cooling, and according to the manufacturer the 2007, 2007 TX, 2003 and 2003 TX models can be connected to air-conditioning equipment with an operating voltage of 24–230 V. For the wireless AVANSA 2007 TX, the manufacturer states that the connection works regardless of whether the equipment operates at 24 V or 230 V.
What is the difference between a room thermostat and a thermostatic radiator valve?
A room thermostat switches the boiler on and off according to the temperature in one reference room. A thermostatic head, for example from the AVANSA TH6 set, controls only one radiator according to the selected setting (* = 6 °C to 5 = 28 °C). They work best together: the room thermostat controls the boiler and the heads fine-tune the temperature in the other rooms.
Can a wireless thermostat be moved between rooms?
Yes. For the AVANSA 2007 TX, the manufacturer states that you can choose the best location while using it, and that you can use the thermostat in different rooms at different times of day. The receiver stays by the boiler, and the thermostat must be within a range of approx. 50 m.
How should I set the night temperature with underfloor heating?
Underfloor heating has a lot of thermal inertia, so choose a smaller setback than with radiators and start heating earlier in the programme. On the AVANSA 2007, switch the switching sensitivity to +0/-0.2 °C, which the manufacturer recommends for underfloor heating. Details are in the How to set a thermostat section.
What if my boiler has no terminals for a room thermostat?
Most boilers have them, often factory-fitted with a jumper link – the boiler manual describes the procedure. If you cannot find them in the manual, contact the boiler service; do not wire the thermostat blindly to other terminals. You can send us your boiler type at info@atria.sk and we will advise you.
Is a room thermostat also suitable for a solid-fuel boiler?
According to the manufacturer, the TH 091 thermostat is also intended for wood, coal and pellet boilers with two-point switching. With a hand-fed boiler, however, the thermostat does not stop the fire, so it must not switch the pump off while the boiler is producing heat. There, the pump should be switched by the boiler temperature – the AVANSA 110 C or 110 E controller or the TH 2A clamp-on thermostat.
Which thermostat should I choose for a holiday home or weekend house?
The AVANSA 2003 or 2003 TX are practical, as in frost mode they maintain a constant +7 °C, or the TH 091 with 7 °C frost protection. In the boiler room, the AVANSA 110 E controller protects the pump from freezing by switching it on when the temperature drops below 5 °C.
